But What If It Rains on My Wedding Day?

It’s one of the most common questions we get from couples, especially during peak wedding season:
“What happens if it rains on our wedding day?”

We completely understand the worry — after all, most people don’t imagine walking down the aisle with an umbrella in hand. But here’s the truth: rain doesn’t have to ruin your day. In fact, it can make it even more magical.

Over the years, we’ve photographed hundreds of weddings across Australia, from the Mornington Peninsula to the Yarra Valley, and we’ve seen our fair share of wet weather. And we can promise you this: you will still have stunning, memorable wedding portraits — rain or shine.

Why Rainy Wedding Days Aren’t a Disaster

  • It Rarely Rains All Day

In more than 600 weddings, we’ve never had one where it poured non-stop from start to finish. Even on the wettest days, there’s almost always a 5–10 minute break in the weather. We’ll be ready to dash outside the moment it happens.

Sometimes this means stepping out during canapés, or slipping away from the reception for a few minutes — and those quick, spontaneous photo sessions often end up being some of the most joyful and natural images of the day. There’s something magical about laughing with your new spouse while dodging puddles and chasing a patch of soft light.

  • Clear Umbrellas Are Your New Best Friend

We always recommend having a few clear umbrellas on hand. Not only do they look gorgeous in photos, but they also let in soft, flattering light while keeping you (mostly) dry.

For light drizzle, they’re perfect. If the rain is heavier, they might not save you completely — but they’ll still help us get romantic, rain-kissed portraits without losing that connection between you and the camera.

  • The Second Shooter Advantage

When the weather’s unpredictable, having a second photographer on your wedding day is a game changer. While one of us is busy capturing your indoor moments — laughter during speeches, candid shots with your guests — the second shooter can be “on weather watch,” ready to alert us to any break in the clouds.

That way, when the sun peeks out for just a few minutes, we can act quickly and capture magic from multiple angles.

  • Boots Over Heels (Just for a Bit!)

If your venue has lawns, gravel paths, or outdoor photo locations, bring a pair of comfy boots. No one will see them under your dress, and they’ll keep you steady (and dry!) as we move between spots. Trust us, sinking heels and slippery surfaces are no fun — boots make everything easier.

The Beauty of Embracing the Weather

Here’s the thing: rain can’t stop you from marrying your person. It might not be the sunny, breezy day you pictured, but it can bring its own kind of romance and beauty.

The sound of raindrops on the roof while you exchange vows. The way your partner looks at you under a shared umbrella. The laughter as your bridal party huddles together between shots. These moments often feel even more intimate and heartfelt.

And years from now, when you tell the story of your wedding day, you’ll remember how you embraced the weather, went with the flow, and still ended up with the most magical photos.

So if it rains? We’ve got you. Always.
